Methodology and limitations
- Unit: a stored case record. Completeness, unique-lawsuit coverage and defendant counts have not been established by this aggregate.
- Dates: the observation date is when these counts were read, not when every underlying case was filed or last checked. Filing dates and first-seen dates are different fields; inconsistent date histories remain under review.
- Scope: the collection contains U.S. federal intellectual-property lawsuit records. Inclusion alone does not establish a Schedule A proceeding, a granted TRO, an account freeze, a merits decision or an outcome.
- Labels: court and firm counts reflect stored labels. Inferred labels are not confirmed representations by a law firm.
- Comparisons: new ingestion, backfills and corrections change coverage. We do not infer national filing growth, a seller’s probability of being sued, fixed IP-type shares or settlement ranges from these counts.
For an individual matter, use its court and case number to check the original docket and orders. The public case library helps locate records; it does not replace the official court record.
